Filter socks are expensive to replace and hassle to clean as it clogs up very quickly. Now has anyone try to buy felt pad or similar, cut a piece and leave it in the sump where the filter socks are so that the water pass through it act as filter socks? I am pretty sure I need to replace them every 3 days but if buy a lot, it’s cost effect. Thoughts?

If hobbyist already doing this, great!

I purchased the filter cup from Red Sea, took out filter socks, and just use filter floss and my Chemipure in the cup. Easier to change and cheaper

A trip to the fabric store and you can find all kinds off batting material to use. I used to do this way back in the day. Polyester. Thats been about 12 years ago. I no longer use socks anymore. Don’t really see a benefit. To much of a pain. And I’m not diligent enough to change them out like I should.

I take it all fabric materials are safe then?

I personally don’t use socks any more. To much of a pain. And when they get clogged, they mess with my ATO. I was never good about changing them anyways. Been sockless for years now. The media cup is a good option though. I use one with no media in it. Lol. Just keeps the water flow quieter dropping into the sump. Filtermediacup.com makes the best ones I have found. They make a high flow and a regular. Diffferent sizes also. And colors.

So far as polyester goes, as long as you buy 100% poly with no added mildew resistant chemicals or anything, you'll be fine.
Is there a way to tell if any chemicals have been added to polyester batting? Most of these fabrics don't list chemicals added.
