Thats actually pretty common with mandarins and I have lost a few to that. They get egg bound and for some reason can't release the eggs which then rot causing what you have.

Yep, they all went into the tank together, and the biggest female actually put the male in his place within seconds of him hitting the bottom. Lol but now they are inseparable, they stay in a group for the most part. The male roams the whole 6 ft tank and the females are either with him or down by their feeding/ sleeping area.Are the females okay with each other too, my male is looking around the whole tank for her, when she couldn’t swim towards the end, he stayed by her side for days.
