Possibly bryopsis, hard to see in the pics but bryopsis looks as you describe. Is that all dry rock? Have you added any corals or other live rock?

25lbs fresh pukani live rock plus 5lbs of matured pukani from my old 90gal. The 5lbs had some hair algae but nothing major. New stuff was NEW. Nothing dry though

My guess would be bryopsis, but you can wait a little and see if it gets thicker and a little longer. If it is bryopsis nothing will really eat it and it's a pain to try and remove manually. Fluconazole (reef hd "reef flux") will kill it completely and is reef safe. I would wait a bit and take a look around at some bryopsis pics to confirm. Then I would dose fluconazole and knock it out.

I agree the description given sounds like Bryopsis. It also kind of looks like hair algae & Bryopsis?, but whatever it is it also seems that those snails (or hermits?) are looking to eat it. What critters are in those cone-shaped shells?

Dwarf Ceriths, also have Florida Ceriths and Neriths, plus some Nassarius
