I am thinking of getting about 50 lbs of dry rocks this weekend with another 20 lbs of live rock. that would give me 60 lbs of live rock and the 50 lbs of dry rock. How should I place it in the tank with dry rock on bottom or top or mixed up with live rock all over. I have a 110 gallon tall aquarium. Any advice on aquascaping would be greatly appreciated like lessons learned from some of you vets would be nice. Is the dry rock a good or bad idea and also I have noticed my sand turning brown on top not slimy or anything just darker in some spots anyone know what this is? Also should I get smaller pieces of live rock or larger and is it better to get round or flat pieces. One last question what is the best way to put it all together I have seen pvc to keep it together or some kind of clay but drying out my live rock for something to cure is not an option or should I just figure our a way to stack it without anything holding it together? Sorry I know this is a lot of questions but still a newbie and reading and trying to learn as much as possible.

I have some pictures on my last post and on here in my album of my rocks I already have.

Dry rock will become live rock.
So stack it the way you like it.

Now there are several different ways to stack it. Some people find the way they want it and drill holes thought it then put an acrylic rod though it to make them sit on top of each other. Some zip tie and glue and epoxy them.

Me I just stack them. Give them a little motion to see if there going to fall and if not, I just leave it.
Just make sure u like it that's what's going to matter

Best of luck to you.

My new tank I went with a full rock wall up the back of the tank. I cut the rock with my tile sand used black expanding pond foam to secure. Thiss does not allow you to change the scape in the future. If you secure small pieces of rock on the back, you will have plenty of room to dry stack or use the drill and pin method to create islands.

You should go to the aquascaping area of the forums and look around on what type of aquascaping you want

Too many options and I personally think you should go on what you like, is just they way you want your tank to look.

Since you are starting your tank you have time to move your rock as much as you want until you get that nice look that you are looking for

Takes a few times until you get it right, so have fun.

Yea I have moved my 50 lbs around a few times and just cant get it how I want. May be my OCD though lol. With adding the dry rock how long does it take it to get some color on it so it isn't blinding white? I have found some really nice pieces of dry rock I like very pour-us and some bigger round pieces I would like to put as a base at the bottom. How long does it take for the dry rock to become live rock and build up the right bacteria in it?

Give it around 4-6 months and your rock will sure start getting some Caroline algae on it, just try to keep your calcium @ 450 for it to color up, they also sell some stuff for your rock to color up faster

Sure enough it will color up and the bacteria will start as soon as your tank cycle

Be patient my friend
