I told my partner I really wanted to buy a ruby red dragonette after I get paid. yesterday a package with fifteen of them showed up at door. While I appreciate the gesture (he thought they would all get along) I just wanted one. I put them into a empty 55gallon quarantine and they are all hopping around, I don’t see any bickering, but I know I don’t have the room, pods to sustain them, and I also doubt they will be getting along like this forever? My main tank has two seahorses, two filefish, and two clowns. I just wanted to add one to that tank.

I have never been in a situation like this and don’t know anyone locally who will take them. Can I just walk in with them to the fish store? I don’t know if they would accept fish from a random source. Is there a way I can sell them online? Or is the only option to give them away for free? I would like to sell them if possible even so I can spend the money from them on corals… and so I can make sure nobody is feeding then to anything. Is there like an online place people rehome fish?

I forgot to add I also have a couple other small fish including a normal scooter blenny in QT. I definitely do not have room for this many in my main tank or any of my other tanks

These guys need an endless supply of pods which they won’t have in a quarantine tank.

I would go to a LFS and buy as many pods as possible to seed the tank. Post up an ad here on R2R/CL/FB and try to and recoup some money. After less than a week I’d be bringing them to an LFS so they can try to keep them alive.

Any LFS will likely happily take them.

Edit: a trade-in mentioned above is probably your best bet.

I did mention in the post that I don’t have the pods to sustain them long term. But I do have a sump filled with them and breed them for my mandarins in another tank so they’re doing fine for now, they also all eat frozen. They’re safe with me I was just asking where to bring them because I don’t feel like doing this forever

Okay thanks I didn’t know that was a thing so felt kind of embarrassed to ask, I’m calling them now thanks!
That's fair! I hope you're able to work out a deal, otherwise the buy trade sell forums here are generally pretty good, I would use local lists too if you don't want to deal with shipping, but that can be tricky if you don't have an aquarium club or specific aquarium list locally since you don't know what kind of people you'd be selling to.

It might also be worth reachign out to whoever your partner bought them from to see if they will take returns and explain the situation.

Your partner deserves endless comps for that effort they didn't know the nuances of the fish but went into it above and beyond. I'm thinking hand prepped dinners for the next month lol or maybe 3 hours worth of massages on a gift card for this effort will balance out nicely

LOL it was an apology gift for being condescending about my fish tank hobby HAHAHA

That must’ve cost a fortune… some of us would envy your situation, and you seem to be doing alright with keeping them.

Also your partner… they’re a keeper, lol
It was really sweet I agree I wish I could keep them all like a herd. The fish store said they’ll get back to me Monday after they check with the owner so hopefully they’ll let me trade some in for some other fish or a coral or something as I only buy one thing at a time always to save money and it’ll be so nice to have more than a frag the size of a pencil eraser lol

They said they’ll get back to me Monday on whether or not we can do a trade! My fingers are crossed. I don’t know why I was so anxious to ask them I have the weirdest social anxiety with reefing I swear! So glad for this forum lol

Here they were floating yesterday. It’s so hard to get a picture of them. They all run into the rocks unless I’m far back. I watch them from a distance

holy smokes your friend is a keeper! who really does that these days ? Seriously , must be a cool human being.

To answer your question , contact any LFS and ask for trade or see if they can negotiate a deal. You can say you ordered too many

On the other hand you have the issue of starvation. So time is of the essence including shipping stress , etc

I keep seahorses and a pair of mandarins so have a sump filled with pods and auto order love pods weekly so they won’t starve! Still, there is too many. The also all are eating frozen mysis too. My LFS is getting back to me Monday. But I did find someone on Facebook who is trading me three for a pair of their seahorses so 13/14 to go!

I'd love to take some off your hands(4 - 5)... unfortunately I can't get a copepod or amphipod population going lol

If anyone knows how to make a culture for different pods I'd love to know. A lot of fish I wants to keep eats them.

I’m not an expert or anything but I keep an aerated separate little tank with a tiny piece of live rock and a ton of Chateo. I add live pods every so often and feed them that green stuff (I forget what it is but it’s labeled pod food). I think the chateo is the key it really makes them thrive. When I want to add pods, I grab a handful of the chateo and shake it into the tank or I’ll leave it there tied to a string so I can take it out later. They reproduce like crazy with chateo. My tank has a ton because I do this pretty often!

dang it... I don't have any spare fishtanks any more and my chaeto colony just got smothered by filamentous last week. I turned the chaeto basket into an algae turf scrubber to compensate.
