Fighter Conch

Has anyone had experience with owning a fighter conch? I have a crushed coral substrate with some wet sand on the bottom. He was good for 2 weeks, but he wasn't looking so good yesterday, and this morning, he had died and was being eaten by my 2 brittle stars and peppermint shrimp. I am thinking maybe I might have taken out to much detritus when performing water changes to bring down my nitrates, but I am also wondering if the crushed coral substrate was just too rough for him as well. If anyone can confirm or deny that these are the problems I had, please let me know. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have owned several-- that substrate is fine. It sounds as if you may not have acclimated him slowly enough. IMO they are definitely at risk if your just 'purchase-and-plop' into the tank.

I drip aclamated him over at least half an hour.

how old is your tank? They can starve to death in newer tanks

I like to go 4 - 6 hours with a Conch or a Sea Hare; no need to rush, better to match your tank very slowly.

good to know. I'm getting some flame scallops as well. I will treat them the same. Thanks

Maybe buy only 1 Flame Scallop... they tend to have a very, very short life-span in a home aquarium. (Just trying to save you money; you can let us know how long yours lives.) Best wishes!

I found them for less than $30. 1 Electric flame and one flame. I love the colors, and just couldn't resist. I haven't actually ordered the white flame yet, but I do have the electric coming. Thanks. I appreciate it.

I have three conchs and they have been great. I do have fine sand, but I also occasionally strap some nori to a rock and leave it on the sand for them after lights-out. They devour that.

i have frozen seaweed delight as well as a multi-nutritional pack containing seaweed and plankton and all that good stuff. I'm just interested in figuring out why it died after 2 weeks.
