Hello Fellow Reefers,

I need some help/advice. I live in Kansas City, KS and I keep my house at 73-74 degrees Spring-Fall however last summer my tank display temp climbed up to an average of 82 degrees. I want to keep the temp at 78-80 without needing to implement a chiller. In preparation for this summer, I added two clip on air king fans to blow at the sump/refugium surface water. I have always had a fan inside of the canopy and the top of the canopy is open and allows hot air to exit. So far it is almost the end of May and the tank temp has already reached a high of 81.9 degrees...

Please Note* I do not have window treatments and a good amount of non-direct natural daylight will hit the tank approx 6-7 hours of the day... Sump is in the basement and plumbed directly above to the main floor display tank. Sump fans are on 24x7 and the canopy fan turns on with the T5 fixture. Any ideas or recommendations to help aide in keeping my display temp between 78-80 degrees? I would think the blue-line pump and T5 fixture are the greatest contributors of heat. Also, I do have the blue-line pump restricted a bit with a gate valve as I needed to turn back the return flow a bit...not sure if that would add some stress/heat to the return pump?

Maybe it's time I save up and get those plantation shutters my wife wants instead of another couple frag packs....

Here is an update of all of my equipment that is being used in this set-up:

· SCAquariums 150 gallon tank and stand (60 x 24 x 24)

· LifeReef LF1-300S custom sump w/ Blueline100HD external return pump (basement sump)

· LifeReef SVS3-24 in sump Protein Skimmer w/ 8” collection cup and powered by Mag9 pump

· LifeReef return manifold (currently tied to refugium flow only)

· 24” LifeReefugium attached to sump and housing copepods and amphipods, a variety of macroalgae/chaeto/red mangrove propagules.

· BRS Dual GFO/Carbon Reactor w/ MJ1200 pump in sump

· Neptune Apex Classic Controller w/ PH, ORP, Temp, Salinity, PM2, Leak detection module, EB8, EB4, B/O box

· Eheim 150-200W heaters x3 (only using two at the moment)

· ATI 48” T5 Fixture w/ 3 C+ and 3 B+ bulbs

· ReefBrite XHO Blue LED Strip 48”

· BRS 6 stage 150GPD RODI system w/ TDS meter

· Tunze 3155 ATO

· Tunze 6095 wavemaker x 2

· Tunze 7096 Multicontroller

· Geo 618 CaRx w/ Milwaukee PH controller and reef fanatic regulator on a 20lb C02 tank w/ MJ1200 pump in sump

· TWO clip on fans in basement aiming down at sump and refugium

· ONE internal fan inside of the canopy to help with cooling DT

I dont have a canopy but I do run MH lights I had big temp issues until I got a big 20" fan and aimed it at the surface. I have the fan controlled by my apex so when temp hits 78.8 the fan kicks on. my Tank never goes over 79 now. I do evaporate around 5 gal a day in the summer.

I voted internal pumps. Seems like youve got lots. Be thankfull you dont need a heater.

My temp used to be 81-84f without problems. Now it runs 72-78 with no problems.

Anywhere from 74-84f is okay. Ideal id say 80f, give time to drop and rise to the min and max, so you can react to the emergency.
