Anyone know what size PVC pipe fits the bulkhead that goes between the tank and the box? The majority of the noise from my tank comes from the water flowing from the aquarium, and hitting the back of the box. This also creates a vortex that sucks air in to the stand pipe. A 45 or 90 in that bulkhead would fix both problems i think.

The bulkhead through the glass is a 1.5in bulkhead.

Curious to see how this works for you. Generally, I would think increasing the height of the stand pipe and adding a muffler would be the best for quieting things.

I raised the level of the emergency overflow, which helped quite a bit. No more "waterfall" noise. The amount of water flowing in to the box itself, hitting the back wall, and the vortex created is the majority of the noise. I have a 40B tank, and 40B sump, and the flow in and out is probably higher than normal. The pump is set to the lowest setting, but it's still enough to cause noise. I could add a valve on the return to restrict it more, but i think this would be easier.

So, i cut the noise down to about half of what it was, and hopefully reduced some of the salt creep coming out of the box. The 90 stopped the vortex and bubbles going down the pipe. I did have to cut the 90 as it wouldn't fit in the box. However.... the rest of the noise is water running in to the internal box. I don't think there is any way to cut that down without putting a valve on the return, and decreasing that flow.
