I purchased a filefish yesterday and it has a strange spot on one side near the rear of the fish. Pardon the LED blue, but the spot is tinted orange. Also, ignore the water spots on the glass :) It's in my 40 breeder QT.

Is this some sort of ailment? If so, what treatments might I pursue?

Thanks!

I'm not seeing it. Does it look anything like Lympho?

The spot is centered in this. It doesn't look like lympho, and doesn't appear to be raised.

Was the orange spot there when you bought him? Can you get a picture with the white lights on?

The spot was there when I bought it yesterday. It seems to behave exactly like the filefish I had before my tank crash, but it's only been about 26 hours.

The second and third photos are just to show the lack of apparent protrusion. These were taken under 5k lighting.

It could be an infection, but it's really hard to say. Is he eating?

This is an odd one. I was hoping it was just pigment in the skin, but I've never seen that kind of filefish with an orange dot on it.

Might be blood under the skin that looks orange because of the yellowish tint of the skin - or because it's light bleeding?

I haven't observed any eating yet, but there is a bit of aptasia in the tank. Tomorrow around noon will see an attempt with some LRS.

Well, it didn't show any interest in food and is now parked in the bottom corner of the tank.

I'm sorry. Are you treating with anything? The only thing I can think of is maybe an antibiotic would maybe help.

I hadn't been until yesterday at around 6PM. I dosed Prazi at 1 ml/4 gal. I'm going to try some LRS fish eggs today.

That looks like an open sore to me. Also it's not uncommon for these filefish not to eat for a week or more. Mine took almost two weeks now she's fat as a walrus.

I do worry about infection as previously mentioned.

I've discovered an open sore. It also appears that there may be a bit of bloating going on.

Definitely time to get the antibiotics in there asap. Kanaplex, furan 2 to name just two. You can combine those two as well to widen the specturm.

Unfortunately, I only have access to Petco and PetSmart today. The other LFS hours and my work schedule don't allow me to make it there for another couple weeks.

I'm picking up API General Cure and Erythromycin, as well as a 10 gallon tank for easier dosing and not needing to burn through nearly so much medication.

Well, it was ready for the frying pan by the time I got home.

At least I have some more meds on hand now.

Sorry to hear this. Are bacterial infections the "new velvet"? o_O They seem to be everywhere right now; I wonder if some nasty bacterial disease is making it's way thru the wholesalers' tanks.
