Hey everyone. Wife is finishing up her rock work today and it looks like we'll be ready for filling the tank. I have a sheet of ABS board in the buttom, and will add our rocks, then sand.

We are using Caribsea live sand. Our rodi system is very slow. I was wondering if we can go on and add the sand, and put a little water per day in the tank until it's filled, or would that eliminate any of the cycle starting?

Never had to wait to fill a tank up so slowly, so this is new to me. Thank you!

I added my substrate before water. Just make sure it's mixed before adding. Maybe keep a powerhead for circulation in there.

We'll have maybe 10 gallons ready to go. I was just going to start making water in our trash cans and pump in the tank. I figure it'll take 2 or 3 trips over the span of next week. As long as that's safe, I'll go on and start tonight.

I was thinking with no heat, it would mess things up for some reason. Our house stays around 70 degrees if that even matters.

You're using live sand and then pouring RODI thats not mixed to 1.026...

.....is that what you're asking?

Well, that's another question. Do I need to have my salt water mixed as I add it to the tank, or can I pour pure rodi water and add the salt once it's full? I'm gonna assume I need to add 5 gallons at a time from my buckets, or in my trash can and mix it to my salinity, and then add?

But, my original question was is it okay to fill the tank up slowly over the week with "live" sand added. No pumps or anything as I only have around 10 gallons of saltwater made currently.

Hope that makes sense!

You pour pure rodi on the sand and let it sit like that....kiss the live bacteria good bye

miracle on 34th street goodbye GIF

2nd. Why so impatient? Just wait until you have and the water you need, mix it properly and let it age fir a day.

Impatience like this will cost you thousands if you continue your hobby like this.

I was thinking that as I was typing. Dumb question lol.

So 10 to 20 gallons a day of salt water until filled is fine though with no heaters/pumps though correct?

Do yourself a favor and get a large brute can and a set of wheels for it. Mix 40g of water to 1.026 and add it to the tank. Add your sand ,and a powerhead. Repeat, and DONE.

What RODI unit do you have. Even a super slow 50 gpd unit should take only 2 days to fill both. I installed a cheap float valve in my brute, toward the top, so I don't have to worry about forgetting about it and flooding the house. It has happened in the past, More than once. LOL

I also hate to wait for the water, so I invested in a 400 GPD system even though I only have a 40g tank right now.

Ours is the 50 gpd 4 stage ro buddie unit. Super slow but it works I suppose. Would rather start off right.

Mix the water to proper salinity before it goes in the tank. No need to get it all in 1 shot.
