Filling RODI Resin.

I can never seem to get them filled properly either. Somehow no mtter how much tapping/banging I do, they end up getting a channel in them. I never get full use out of a canister.

Been thinking about buying the prefilled ones for a couple bucks more. I wonder if what I'm wasting in unused resin, would offset the extra on the prefilled ones?

who fills the prefilled ones though

I was considering that too but thought surely I must be more OCD than them :D

Kind of what I thought too, but I never seem to get what I think should be enough life out of the resin(never actually figured out the gallonage). I do know whenever I empty it out, there always seems to be quite a bit that never changed color with a channel through it.

Not sure how the colour resin works, could just be some resin never changes colour? But I guess if it looks like a channel it probably is a filling mistake.

I tried adding water this time, to help it settle into place, think it may have helped? but also made a big mess.

Broke the top banging it too hard. LOL
I didn't say that hard LOL
I do it in the bottom of the sink. Bang bang bang bang add more repeat
until I get within about a 1/2 inch of the top then I put the sponge in and screw it together.
I just ordered another 7.5 pounds of bulk resin.
I use a plastic serving spoon I got at the dollar store to put it in.

They are tricky. I do not get channelizing (and I hope saying so does not raise the ire of the Resin gods). I add a bit and tap, tap, tap and fill a bit more and tap, tap, tap and so on. I fill it as far as I can and then cram the top on and screw it down with the little foam rubber thing. It seems as if you cannot pack it too tightly.

You have me worried now as I filled right to the top and still managed to get the lid on

I'd assume I'm willing to spend way more time trying to compact the resin than someone who works at a factory somewhere is willing to.

I've packed my own and bought the pre-filled cartridges, and either way I have to replace it before all of the resin changes colors. I think I'm going to start buying the resin that doesn't change color so that I can't see that I'm throwing away perfectly good resin.

Any tips on filling the resin cartridge?

Just filled mine, not looking forward to doing it again, a lot of banging and I'm still left with the feeling I haven't compacted it enough.
I used to. Will not any more. They aren't too expensive to just buy every six months. All filters should be replaced every 6 and membranes every year regardless of what all these people and corporations tell you. Membranes on the pack say1-2 years and all filters say 3-9 months. From my experience just do 6 and 12 for the membrane and you never have issues.

Mine has always fully changed color. I use the flat top of a screwdriver to tamp it down. It's still kind of a pain since every time I hit it, it works it's way up around the screwdriver, but it works a lot better than anything I tried before that.
I have the smaller RODI (50gpd?) that has a quick connect on the top and bottom of each cartridge meaning I can't really tap the whole thing on hard surface or I'd risk breaking the end off.

Hey I just realized that someone on thingiverse put plans for a 3d printed resin packing tool. We'll I'm off to go print one. Hopefully it makes it much easier to pack.

Saw that a few days ago when I was looking for some cartridge holders. I was going to print it out, but luckily, I don't have to repack that cartridge too often and the screwdriver method has been working out well. Also, the screwdriver has a good bit of weight to it, unlike PLA, which probably makes it easier.

An espresso/cappuccino tamper might work as well.

There are many size tanks and all of our source water is different. Why do you think how long your filters last has anything to do with ours? You change them when they are exhausted, not by the calendar.
I have 2 di cannisters and have to change them every 2-3 months.

I've just upgraded my carbon from a standard to a chlorine specific one, says it's good for 50,000 gallons, I only have a nano, was going to try for 12 months?
Are these filters only exhausted by water volume or time too?

I do agree changing more often is a good move but don't want to just throw a perfectly good filter away, I'm also moving to 3 mixed bed resin canisters system, will change one resin every 3 months, as I have just experienced quite bad diotoms because I waited too long to change the filters.

I agree with this. Takes my sediment almost a year to get any color to it. It is 34 tds spring water from a well. My membrane is 3 years old and still has a 99% rejection rate. (Measures 0 after membrane, but highly doubt it is exactly 0).
