I have a film on the surface of my water. What is it? Where does it come from? How do I get rid of it? I have soft coral and a few fish.

It's generally organic matter and/or dust.

An overflow skims it off. Without an overflow it can be more challenging, but skimming and GAC will help considerably.

Good surface agitation will help quite a bit. If your using a canister, hob mechanical filter, you can use some pretty easy diy and easy to purchase mods, to skim the surface, including an internal overflow box with suction cups, or you can glue it.

Whats your set up?

Oh, and quick fix, lay a paper towel on the surface and then pull them off before they sink.
