Definitley NOT a cannister filter, but you really dont need a HOB either. I would just get a HOB skimmer instead. All you really need is your live rock and a skimmer. If you dont have a sump which im assuming you dont, then just get a hob skimmer.A skimmer would do a LOT more for your tank than a HOB filter or cannister filter.

And I have a mame skimmer japanese brand lots of little stuff floating around worse now cuss I put a tiger watchman gobie in he kicks up a lot of stuff

Its not so much that canister filters are bad. Properly maintained they make a great addition to any tank. But the key is to keep them clean, which means extra work on tanks that already require a lot of attention. If not maintained properly canister and HOB filters can become big nitrate producers which means big issues for your tank.

If you have live rock, definitely go for the hang on back Skimmer. If not then a Aquaclear HOB or Fluval canister would do the job. Don't pay attention to the NITRATE FACTORY stories, keep them clean and they won't.

If a person sneezes, someone else automatically says bless you. If person says canister filter, someone else automatically says NITRATE FACTORY.

We got rid of our canister for HOT filters, I like the HOT filters mainly because of ease of use.. They are WAY easier to get to than a canister....

Well said. I ran a very successful mixed reef for about a year before my upgrade with a aquaclear 110 and Prizm skimmer kept then clean and no problem.
