I have a red sea reefer 250 and found that the filter socks were expensive and I don't want to wash anymore. I would rather use media cups. The V3 sump has a baffle in the chamber immediately after the filter socks. The baffle has a 6 inch by 1.5 inch hole in it and I have been placing fleece from Walmart on it and it's working great to filter/polish the water.

Im running out of fleece. The fleece gets dirty pretty quick as well. I change it daily. I'm starting to have second thoughts about using the Walmart fleece because I've heard stories about them having flame retardant and other chemicals.

Anyone know of any other options out there?

I thought about buying a roll for one of the automatic filter floss contraptions and just cut strips of that. One company has a 50 micron 7 inch roll on BRS. Do you think this is something that would work? Or is that stuff too thin to be useful? Fleece is pretty thick.

Thanks in advance.

Please explain what Walmart fleece is. Name of brand? Picture? I use poly fil that you can get from Michaels. I stuff 3 media cups 3/4 of the way and leave the fourth cup with a media bag for carbon and a circular cut pinkys filter pad in the 4th. It does not clog and overflow but I like to change them 2 to 3 times a week. I absolutely love not having to fart around with washing nasty filter socks. Or worse putting them in my washing machine. Pods, fish poop, bacteria… don’t want that in the machine I use for my clothes.

Here is some floss I use.

Is that a roll of a pad? Or do you grab a handful of floss to make it as thick or thin as you want?
Its about a 1" thick pad/roll.

The fleece I bought was by the yard. It's kind of like felt cloth. Some Walmarts have a fabric section like a Joanne fabrics would have. This is a sheet of fleece/felt cloth material not polyfill fluff or 1 inch thick material.

I just cut it to size. I bought 3 yards by 3 feet. So I've had it for a while. I can take some picks when I get home. it looks like the roller filter fleece from the automatic roller systems but from pictures it looks maybe 3 times as thick?

Wow I didn't even think of that. Maybe I should look into that. Is there any fire retardant or anything on that?

I have run socks and just a cup with filter floss, then I went to a Clarisea recently. Love it so far. No more sock cleaning. Replace the roll every 3-4 weeks and I'm a happy camper. Plus the old lady hated me washing socks in the washing machine.

I have used it also, it works but it will clog up fast. You put some in a media cup. (Filter floss)

I've been changing this felt/fleece daily and I think it's because all 60 gallons flows through a 6 inch by 1 inch path so there isn't much surface area.

I must say my water is crystal clear and my nutrients are pretty low. My nitrates have been around 5ppm and I've been having to dose phosphates every other day. Maybe this is working too well. I don't have a skimmer online right now and probably won't untill my nutrients rise. I even dose coral ab+ at half dosage every other day.

How fast is fast for you? What size tank did you have?

Question: By "hole", do you mean the area reserved for the comb filter? (please refer to the smaller image of the sump at the bottom that has the removable glass pane with the black mesh at the top) Just keep in-mind that this is designed as an overflow/safety feature, and that if you're covering it with filtration material you're probably raising the water level in your sump a bit.

Every couple days, the roller is just nice because it takes the work out of it. When you want to go on vacation and etc. One less thing to worry about.

I have a 525xl, so 139 gallons for the whole system.

I bought my tank used so I don't have a comb in there. I didn't know there was supposed to be one even! I put the fleece where that comb "hole" is in the baffle.

You definitly raise the level of the sump water by doing what I do. But just how it's designed, water will flow over the baffle there just fine if the fleece is clogged. It raises the sump level by about an inch vs having no comb at all.
