Filter floss alternate of gauze?

Is it possible to use instead of filter floss gauze?

Filter floss is pretty cheap compared to gauze. Is the gauze the non stick type?

And compact quickly which will leave a big ball of gauze that ain't doing squat to filter anything. Plus it's not cotton is it? Go with synthetic.

I use blue/white filter sponge cut in 4" strips, rolled up and stuffed in sock holder. $15 for 6 ft roll, lasts 4 months. Throw it away weekly.
