Hey all,

I have been doing some reading on socks. I am thinking about removing the socks, extending my drain to 1" below the waterline and putting floss in my last baffle before the return.

Thoughts?

I would worry about floss making it through to the return pump and causing a problem.

Perhaps a filter cup to replace the sock and put your floss in it, as most other people do.

I tried removing the socks and going to just filter wool in the newish Red Sea media holders (cup as already mentiined) which are the same size as sock holders.

I have always used the mesh socks but thought I would try a throw away solution. It did work to an extent, but I wash the socks in the washing machine in a batch once a month which is also easy so I went back to socks in the holders.

What I also now do however, is use filter socks and then also have a couple of chunks of floss in the sump and it’s stops most of the rubbish building up. I just change it out every week or so

One of the chunks of floss is before the return, wedged in, so hopefully it can’t move!! Lol

Socks. Floss clogs quickly and ends up in tubes and pump intakes and not really reuseable.

Filter floss is easier to use, requires less effort, it's cheap and as a result, I find it to be the most effective mechincal filter.

So long as you replace the floss every 3 or 4 days. So I, twice a week, pull the old and toss in fresh floss. I put the floss in a BRS reactor and that keeps everything clean and simple to change as often as needed. This also helps prevent the food and waste trapped in the old media from releasing back into the water while I change it out.

The only con is the additional pump needed to run the reactor.

I have transitioned from socks to filter floss. More convenient for me. I can just cut a piece an put it over on the filter sock holder and toss the used one. For my next build I will be implementing a filter floss holder like WWC has on their tank.
