Filter Floss vs Socks?

I built my sump with a "removable drop in" dual sock tray. I never use the sock tray though as I have a piece of egg crate in its place with 100 micron filter padding on top. The padding is inexpensive, rinses very easily and is reusable.

I did the same thing and it has been working great. I put a layer of filter padding down first and top it off with a piece of felt that I got a a fabric store. I could probably just do one or the other. When my supply is used up I think I will get the product that has two layers of filtration in a singe pad.

filter socks is the best. I've use both and prefer the socks usually 200 micron and I change mine out and dispose every 2 days. I'm not a fan of bleaching them and washing but my LFS has the innovative marine socks for $4 so it's not too bad.
You use the socks once and toss them? That's crazy. Even at only $4 each you're spending like $1300 a year (rough math) on socks. That's insane.

This is my first tank running socks and I actually just pulled them out earlier tonight and threw them in the washer. I was shocked at how filthy they were. Seem to be doing their job

I use filter floss in both my tanks and replace every other ish day.. it's cheap and easy. No washing machines or bleach.

I use a filter media cup and put two layers of roughly 2" whatever makes it thru first layer is caught by second layer

Anybody run 7” socks?
1-7" sock in my 120. 200 micron.
Looking for 300 micron.
I change them twice a week.
I now rinse in the garage sink
Then run in washer with a 1/4 cup of 34% h202.
I do around 4 to 5 at a time.
I also have 4" in my frag tank.

Do you happen to have a picture? I’m really wanting to do something about my filter sock trays in my Red Sea sump. I hate swapping socks so frequently and especially dislike having to clean the socks.

Then I clean the filter material in my utility sink every few days so no waste. I rotate two filter pads and they will last months.

I use filter cups with poly fil. I chose this route due to the amount of cleaning socks needed to keep optimal. Much easier to toss out the floss every other day and replace. Plus I got 2 large bags from walmart for like, 10$ and have hardly made a dent in 1 bag.

Wow, thanks for sharing. Thats a great concept and sure beats cleaning socks! I'll going to the drawing board on how I might be able to implement something similar.

@Akida17th I wish I could afford to do that. I have always had to bleach them. That is over $100 a month just in filter socks (I'll be running 2-3). I should look into the mesh socks. I bought one once, but it was around 600 micron I think, so allot of stuff went right through it. I'll have to try a smaller micron rating one.
Try 100 micron filter socks. Might be better. I use a mesh sock that holds my
Chemo pro and my other sock is a 100 micron filter sock that holds up pretty well for a few days, I rise it once then replace about once a week. My
Mesh one I just clean once every two weeks or so and reuse.
but honestly see what works best for you and run with it as everyone’s tanks are different

I prefer felt socks - great at filtering if you change every 3-4 days. I have about 30 of them and
Swap them out every few days, then I wash them about every 3 months. Extremely cheap since they last almost forever.

I use a pillow stuffing like floss in my biocube and pico just because it fits better in the small chambers. If I had felt socks that would fit I would go to that to minimize monthly cost.
