What kind do you use and where do you get it? Do you mind posting a link? I've been using Big Al's but thinking of switching to a different brand. It seems to let loose a lot of fine hairs while I rinse it before use.

I don't I'm sorry I'll look it up though.Does anybody remember the fiberglass filter floss?
Or am I the only one that old on this thread![]()
Well, Back then everybody used "cotton" filter media and packed carbon under it in the filter.I don't I'm sorry I'll look it up though.

What about...IMO nothing works better than The Incomparable Poly Pads by Bio-Marine
Good for youI just use pillow stuffing from wal mart. It's like $4 and lasts me a couple months.

What about...
"Freak'n Laser Beams"
Sure did.@reefwiser
Have you ever used that old fiberglass floss that was out in the 70's and 80's?
What I do with the poly fill is I cut it up into the size I need. Then every day I use one of those plastic Honey Ham containers to put the old filter material in and then place the new piece in the overflow. I have used filter bags in the past but over time they will clog and even after washing you don't get everything out. This is simple and easy to do and is part of my daily routine. You always need to develop a daily what I call PM (preventive Maintenance) this comes my years as a maintenance tech. It is built up of all the accidents that happen over the years.
LolThey're made with One Million Dollar Freak'n Lazer Beams
So you open up the stuffing and just put the appropriate amount in and rinse as needed?
How often do you change it out?
Thanks
An I have to learn it a new with each new tank I set up. As each tank will have slightly different limits to which one can work with as far as the input of nutrients and what methods are needed to achieve a balance for the input of the nutrients. If you have a large aquarium say 500 gallons you can get away with a lot. As you have water volume on your side. In a small aquarium you can not get a way with anything you must have a very strong removal of nutrients or you will be fighting issues of water quality all the time.I just throw it away. I bag can last me a whole year so I really don't bother with trying save it. Its more important to me to keep the nutrient level down. See if you let water wash thru the waste that the floss collects this leads to and increase in nitrates in your aquarium. An it is best to limit the increase and control it by measures like throwing away floss. We see the rise of these roller mat devices that advance as they clog up with the waste to do the same thing. If you travel for work or have the money and space to install such a device it nice. I have the 5 minutes a day to do it so I just replace the floss. It's part of keeping the nutrient input of the tank under control. This along with a measured feeding of the fish keeps me from having to deal with over nutrient issues like cyano hair algae and the like. It has taken me a long time to learn this.An I have to learn it a new with each new tank I set up.
