So. I have a fairly new 65 gallon tank that has 4 different corals and 2 black ocellaris clowns. I started the tank 7 weeks ago with an Aquaclear 110 HOB and a BakPak2 hob as the the only filtration. Last week I upgraded the bakpak to a octopus classic 90 hob ( After the octo was broken in i removed they bakpak to be used on a different system.

I have the opportunity to get a fluval 407 for $150 that is in perfect condition. I have plenty experience in freshwater systems but I new to saltwater. I know in freshwater the canisters can be great water polishers and good at running different media like carbon when needed. I also (in freshwater) always believed that you really could not over filter water.

my question(s) are for salt is it ok to use the canister for the purpose of polishing the water ? Assuming I keep the chambers clean so nitrates don’t become an issue

Also are there any ones bad experience with using a canister as a secondary type of filtration

and then would y’all consider on a 65 gallon that a Aquaclear 110 , reef octo 90 Hob and a Fluval 407 are too much for that size tank

Thanks for your input

They are ok for saltwater. Most people don't use them though as HOB's are easier to clean (if they are not using an all in one or a sump).

As for running both, it wouldn't be bad but it may be uneccessary.

Canister filters can work with saltwater for sure! I used to run a Marineland c-220 canister filter. It worked great no isssues but required weekly/biweekly maintenance. If you have no problem with that all shall be successful!

I use a canister. I used to have the Fluval but you can’t get much bio media in them and leaks when you disconnect the hoses. I’m now running a shop branded filter that’s actually a SunSun with nice deep baskets. The bottom one has a medium foam and floss pad to keep all the crap at the bottom of the filter and the basket above is full of a mixture of bio media’s and the final one has carbon in. The filter also has UV built in that can be turned off separately from the canister power. It doesn’t leak either when the hoses are disconnected. Nearly forgot, it also means I can use an external hydro heater with it. You can’t do that on the Fluval due to the small diameter ribbed hosing.

It works brilliantly and probably takes me all of 5 mins to clean each week.
