Currently have plastic bio balls with foam insert and plastic balls with carbon inside. I was curious about switching to inserts instead of balls does that make a difference? Also curious how often I should be replacing?

I would prefer the inserts since the plastic part of the balls are just wasting space imo. Actually I don't do name brand filter material. I just buy a big bag of filter floss and cut it up. Or even cheaper is the white pillow fluff from the area and crafts store. As for cleaning every week or two should be fine but just check on it periodically and decide when it's ready for cleaning
