I ordered a HOB filter (Marineland Penguin 150) for a fish-only tank and I'm putting some custom filtration in it (took out the cartridge that came with it). I'm not sure if I have the media in the right order.

From the bottom upwards, I have...
Filter sponge at the bottom
Nitrogen-reducing filter pad (Imaginitarium)
Filter floss
Fluval Biomax at the top

Will this order do the job? I'm looking at a pretty basic tank setup. Just want to make sure I'm not screwing things up with the order of the media...

I think this is fine

IMHO, you are thinking this through the wrong way. The Penguin 150 pulls water up a tube into the back of the filter area where it then flows through, back to front. You will see almost no benefit from stacking various media top to bottom. The water will flow right across the top of the filter and bypass the rest completely.

I used the dual biowheel Emperor filter for 22 years on a 60g cube. It worked just fine, but I used the floss/carbon filter in back, and stuffed the front cartridge with ceramic media to increase biological filtration area.

Hum not top down or bottoms up. kinda weird oh well I learn something every day
