Filter media while cycling

Most bacteria in bottle or ammonia products suggest taking out any carbon/gfo skimmers and socks until cycle is complete. Quick question from someone who’s never done this… that means nothing but the heater and return pump in the sump? No media other than the rock and sand in the display?

Correct. All of the other things mentioned are intended to clean the water in one way or another. You need it to just do its thing.
