Filter media

What is the best type of filter media? At the moment I only a filter sock and I have 2 sponges and some carbon balls I don’t have any corals at the moment but are looking into getting some, so I didn’t know if I needed to change the media ?

Quality bituminous or ROX 0.8 carbon, any mechanical filter like socks, and (if phosphate is high) GFO. A pinch GFO can be put into a very fine mesh bag with carbon (again if phosphate is an issue). That is really all you need.
