Hey guys,
What's the best filter media?
I want the water clean enough for SPS, but I don't want to strip the water of the nutrients/elements.

The notion of stripping nutrients with a filter is not really backed up with much science. Living things can deplete nutrients and trace elements, e.g., strong macro algae growth can deplete everything.

Oh ok I heard that certain media can "strip" the water of nutrients so I wanted to be sure that didn't happen. Appreciate the insight!

Same here my friend. I've been trying to wrap my head around my current LPS alk and ca consumption and seeing where my nutrients are on a stable basis before I jump into that tho :)

Haha ok cool. Good to know someone else is chasing the same SPS dream! Think I'll let the tank cycle and then wait 6 months until the water matures a little to add SPS. I heard you can add Kalk to your auto-top off to replenish the consumption. Is that what you're currently doing?

I've only very recently started dosing (and testing more tbh) using ESV Bionic. Up until recently I've been able to maintain params with just water changes. As my tank matures and I have no algae I've slowed down on the water changes so I don't alter my stability too much with the dosing and I no longer want to bottom out my NO3 and PO4 (as I was trying to keep this low while fighting uglies). I'm not yet sure on any set schedule for wc's yet as I monitor parameters... I was going to do kalk (really looked into this heavy) but I want a reliable method to track PH before I try it and I just haven't decided which I want yet...

Gotcha. I'll ask you at a later time how you're liking the ESV nutrients since you recently just started dosing. Yea I heard you can simply do water changes to keep up with parameters, but once you keep tougher coral you'll have to start dosing. Appreciate the info tho what size is your tank?

Yeah I'm learning wc's are probably all most people need until they're corals start really taking off.. See lots of posts dosing day 1 but the corals are so new they haven't even considered growing yet...idk..stlll learning myself tho obv.
