Hey guys, as the title states, I'm curious about some filtration modifications for the Fluval 13.5. I know about the InTank media basket for it and everything but as a college student on a budget, I would rather go with a DIY egg crate basket over the $65 one[emoji13] I also plan to do a simple refugium with chaeto algae so I guess I was wondering if the stock filtration with the refugium would be enough for just a couple gobies and a pistol shrimp? If it's not, what do you guys suggest?

I think you plan would work good

When I had mine I remember reading about someone suggesting to plug the small little hole on the black wall.

So I just put a little epoxy over it and seemed to help a bit in keeping stuff out of the chambers. Dont know why the hole is there but it bypasses the intake grate.

Not really a big deal but might help a little with keeping back there clean.

Why do you want to change it? The design is actually pretty efficient. With my wife's I took the sponge holder out and kept the ceramic media in it then put a bag of chemipure blue in the other tier. I wouldn't plug up any holes, water passing through the chambers is what it's supposed to do. Once a month I'd rinse the sponge and media in old saltwater during a water change. If your worried about keeping the chambers cleaner you can put some filter pad in the first chamber but siphoning the chambers monthly just became regular maintenance. That tank did surprisingly well with an extra nano powerhead and upgraded lighting.
