Good morning reefers!! Just out of curiosity how do you guys clean your filter socks?
washer?
bleach soak and shoot out?
Just shoot out with water hose?
I’m sure this will help a lot of people to maintain a cleaner system!? Thanks guys

Same as @Maya Ybry-Yagy I soak the sock in a bucket of water with some bleach. Then do about three rinses where I agitate the sock, and empty the bucket each time. By the third rinse the water is usually coming out clear. Final soak with a bit of Seachem Prime and then dry. Not including the first soak the whole process is 10-15 minutes.

I turn mine inside out, rinse hard in the laundry tub, then into the washer with an extra rinse.
I only use tapwater.
I turn them right side out then stand up to air dry.

I used to use bleach but find it unnecessary and adds steps to remove it.
The only benefit I found with bleach was to remove discoloration.

Hello,

Everyones methods work well. Ends up being what works best for you. Me, last 20 years I throw them in the laundry sink until my wife yells about the pile. Then into the washer with bleach, extra rinse cycle. Hang to dry. When ready to use I dip in prime to be sure no left over bleach. Works great and the wife is like a reminder to clean the socks ;Happy

I just use a garden hose to clean mine or sometime I will use the washing machine

Whitest whites setting on washer with 2/3 cup of bleach. It’s a front loading washer and when it’s done I literally don’t do anything else.

Washer on hot 2x weekly.

No chems here. Turn inside out and rinse large debris. I throw a few rubber dog toys in the washer to agitate in a front load. Did this for 3 years and never had a problem. Washer never smelled.

Rinse all the stuff off and wash in the washer on sterile setting. No soap, no bleach. The heat in sterile mode does a great job.

I have like 20+ socks for my tank. I change them 2x a week and go about 2 months before I wash them.

Dirty socks are rinsed and rung out over the sink and stored in an old salt bucket with lid
I run an empty cycle in the washer with bleach first to clean/ rinse any soap out.
1 cycle with the socks and heavy bleach - maybe 2 if needed.
2 cycles just to rinse
Air dry

Turn it inside out and remove any large debris. Then wash on extra heavy with hot water (I do 2 cycles, Most do 1 wash and a second rinse cycle). If they're bad, I add a little bleach to the first wash. Let them air dry, not in the dryer, and you're good to go!
