Filter sock less

I feed way too much for filter socks to not turn into a constant chore.
They seemed like an amazing idea but meh.
Most of the particulates they were catching just end up on the bottom of my sump because of gravity. Easily enough to suck it out with my python.

I run mesh socks as opposed to felt/flees socks - it lets me get the best of both methods and catch the big stuff, but let the small stuff pas through and just settle in the sump, where like @Stealthreefer said, you can just vacuum it out.

There are mesh socks from 500 to 50 micron. the 500 micron is porous enough to catch things like bubble algae or other large debris, but otherwise let everything else go right on though, and then there are others, like 50 micron mesh socks that will catch some detritus and other stuff, but take a long time to clog up

They are way easier to clean (just run them under running water and manually work them - then set out to dry) and in general won't need cleaning as often.

Went filter sockless about 2 months ago

Not sure if i notice a difference
The need for mechanical filtration depends on bioload and what solids you want to remove. I agree that the solids you want to remove might not be critical. For heavy bio load, mechanical filtration is a prudent practice.

Tank is mixed reef/lps/soft

Tankmates
Blue yellow belly regal 11yr old

180g-not sure where that falls for load

Just posted this in another thead.
There's another potential solution. Don't use socks, floss, rollers or diapers....

Not every tank needs them. I've been running without for the past couple of years. I had socks, then floss. Now I just run Aquamesh Blue that I rinse out periodically. I also have a skimmer. I was also running an ATS, but that's been off for the past couple of months.

I have 40 gallon AIO mixed reef, with five fish. Feed LRS nano, spirulina, mysis, Oyster Fest, R.O.E. and Phyto Fest daily. I would estimate it all adds up to ~1/3 cube or so. Currently dosing Bacto Balance and Amino Organic once a week, 0.2ml each. Nitrate currently around 3PPM and Phosphate around 0.3PPM.

I hated cleaning filter socks every couple of days. Ditched the socks and use filter floss now.

So much easier. I just toss the old floss and cut a new one as needed.

If you have filter socks that can get clogged, then they are working. They work and not using them just makes the tank dirtier.
