the urban legend is that filter socks that house detris and are submerged in the water contribute to raised wp's. this is why i went away from them. after all it was one of the biggest selling points of roller matts

IN YOUR OPINION is it best to keep your socks supended above the water level or not. does it matter?

socks should not be left in the system that long to the point where that becomes a big issue.

I think your missing the point where socks needs to be swaped or changed every couple of days, and not left there until water starts overflowing out of them, or they start becoming nitrate factories like canisters and sponge filters.

This is why roller mats win... because they roll away the dirty portion before it gets there.

On my Fowler tank. I cut my over flow drain to just touch the surface. It drains in the center of the sump so water overflow is not a worry once the sock gets full. I then put my filter sock over that drain An attach it to the undersiade of my stand so the bottom of the sock is touching the water surface. I don't get a lot of water thru my over flow but it does get a small amount of water going thru it.

Just like most sump designs.but above the water works perfect. I don't use filter socks for my main drains. In my sump. I hate them. I really do.

Once you go RS Reef Matt - you never go back. #trust. I have 2 tanks. My 200G had 4 socks and my 180 2. I put in a Reef Matt about 6 months ago and am soooooo happy not to be washing 30 - 40 socks every 6 weeks or so. Now i have a reef matt in the 200g and my life is much easier. I'd put one in the 180g tank but there's not enough space. Also, Phos is down and manageable without using any additional phosphate media.
