Just a quick question. Im not a fan of using bleach to clean my filter socks incase ileave traces of it and it gets in the water. Ive been using vinegar which is safe and is working nicely but i experimented with soaking the socks in peroxide overnight and that worked great too! Could i make a mixture of peroxide AND vinegar in a bucket to soak my socks in or is it bad to mix those two together? I would just run them in the wash without soap, but i dont have enough filter socks(only have 4 at the moment. Switch two at a time every 3 to 4 days) to justify using a whole load for them. So what do you guys think? Is is okay to make a mixture with vinegar peroxide, and water??

i would think the vinegar would cause the peroxide to be ineffective. plus peroxide and bleach when exposed to light breaks down. thats why they dont sell them in clear bottles. Also its perfectly safe to use bleach with filter socks, i been doing it for years. i rinse the sock, then soak in in 5 percent bleach solution. then i rinse and soak in water for a day then let completely air dry. bleach and peroxide are both very unstable chemicals. believe they both break down to basically salt and water. you can use bleach to disinfect drinking water then let water sit for 24 hours then drink it

i know you cant mix bleach with vinegar , it makes a poisonous gas. so to answer your question, i am not sure how safe it is to mix vinegar an acid with hydrogen peroxide.

For years and years I've sprayed them off in my utility sink, thrown them in the washer with bleach and let them air dry completely. Before use, I rinse with RO/DI water and squeeze out the excess and in they go. Never any side effects.

You shouldn't mix bleach with most other cleaners as some sort of gas will result.

I do however use bleach with 20 Mule Team Borax (a water softener) in my washing machine. Rinse twice and air dry.
They come out extra clean.

1. Bleach + Vinegar = Toxic Chlorine Gas. While the combination does create a good disinfectant, these two common cleaning agents should never be used at the same time. Why: Adding any weak acid to bleach will release toxic chlorine and chloramine vapors.Sep 26, 2013

You don't want to mix peroxide and vinegar (acetic acid). It's not that something bad will happen, but the resulting peracetic acid is a weaker acid than acetic acid, and is now unstable.

My suggestion is to switch to mesh socks and very simply wash them by running under the faucet and rubbing fabric to fabric. No cleaners necessary.

Do mesh socks come with the plastic 4" ring?

Yes and no....they come without a ring or with a ring....4 inch or 7 inch. I use 7 inch plastic ringed mesh socks.

Yes. I know this from experience. Inhaling this stuff is no fun.

I have an eshoppes sock holder that hangs in my sump. It uses the socks with a rectangular brace 7x3" approx. anyone know if there are any other brands that come in that size besides the one made by eshoppes? These are 300 micron I think, made like felt.

Is mesh better than felt?

I wash my felt socks in the washing machine with bleach and put de-chlorinator in the rinse cycle, then let completely air dry before using. My mesh socks I just turn inside out and blast with a hose.

My routine is: dirty sock rinsed out under faucet, thrown in bleach over night, rinsed out with tap, dried till next day. I have a rotation of 5 of them, never had any issues. I don't usually worry about any residual, because the organics in the tank will overwhelm any oxidizing effects; however if you want to get fancy there are bleach neutralizers, not sure what the residuals are, but may be worth experimenting as some are fairly inexpensive. I just personally don't think it's that worth getting worked up about in the grand scheme of things that can go wrong with your tank.

For argument's sake, what would be the visible effects if there are amounts of bleach in the tank? It's not like 1 drop would kill your tank, there is a ratio of hypochlorite ions to organics, and once that amount is used up it is effectively neutralized. For example over time my bleach loses it's potential and socks don't get white anymore, so I replace the bleach water every week or so.

The mesh socks are 100 time easy maintenance than regular felt socks...just put faucet water and brand new again ...but after couple weeks they let it all my sump full of ditritus...that's the diference ...felt socks better collector small particles...mesh filter easy maintenace...

I just wash my felt socks like 3 times on rinse and spin in the washing machine with no bleach. They always look really clean am I doing something wrong?
