not at all, anything more than 4-5 inches is pretty useless anyways, how long would it take something to get down that far without being eaten, converted, dissolved, you are trapping large particles (typically 200 microns and up) and those trapped particles immediately start to decay feeding the sand bed bacteria. If you feed heavy change the socks often or you will find the sand bed needs to be about 2000 square feet to handle it all lolshould i use a filter sock on a sump if i am using a dsb .if you do are you removing the waste that the sand bed needs

They work great if you are willing to put in the effort of changing them out a couple times a week.
