I have a 10-gallon with a Hydor 425 gph pump in the DT. No sump or anything else - just DT. During a cleaning (turkey baster, mixing shallow sand bed, etc) I was thinking of placing a drawstring filter sock over the Hydor pump to catch small dust and particles. Would this work?

Sure, I don't see why not as long as you don't starve the pump. You might find that the flow exceeds the capacity of the sock and you don't capture as much detritus as you'd like, but other than that, I say give it a shot.

It does work! I did that when I removed all my rock and corals to catch my fish for QT. When I put everything back in it was really cloudy so I put a filter sock on my bigger powerhead. It does work, you just have to have a good way to secure it in front of the powerhead so it doesn't fall or float ascew. See how it floats some? It still worked like that, I just had to make sure it didn't go sideways so the flow from the powerhead was directed inside the sock.
