Is there a reusable/disposable filter sock that you would keep the ring and just change out the filter sock every 3 days?

Bulk Reef Supply offers filter socks with and without the ring (however they are often the same price) as well as filter mesh with and without the ring. Another option is the filter media cups.

Filter socks are washable. I have switched to mesh which are too easy to clean by hand and takes about a minute to fully clean

Are filter socks not reusable? I just toss them in the water with bleach and double rinse.

Yes, many people reuse their filter socks. There are several threads here on R2R about various ways of cleaning from power washing to washing machines and more.

How much difference in tank cleanliness have you noticed? Was thinking of switching to mesh, but the felt clean so well but are a pain to clean

Much more being trapped- less particles in the water

because its creating waste that you are just throwing into landfill instead of you reusing something.

Personally, I went sockless. Water isn't as crystal clear, but I think it's better for the filter feeders in my tank. Much less hassle!

thank you for your feedback.

BRS did a video where, if you rinse your filter socks every 3 days or more often that it reduces nitrate/phosphate by roughly 30%. Having said that, I'm lazy, and I don't bother rinsing mine and let the refugium handle the excess. I also use mine as a place for activated charcoal (generally).

Yes, we just released our latest product, the Reef Diaper. It is just as you described. The flange assembly is reusable and the filter element is disposable. The elements are available in bulk for 98¢ each. You can find additional information on our website. Let me know if you have any questions.

I washer machine my socks with bleach. If I still see any stain I run it through again. So far I been using the same 10 socks for 6 months changing out every three days. That is called cost savings! Lol

I went thick, seems to hold up better in a washer machine.

Aquatic Experts Filter Socks 200 Micron - 4 Inch Ring by 14 Inch Long – Long - Premium Aquarium Felt Filter Bags - Custom Made in The USA

This is what I use. Also I don’t need to take the ring off ( well you can’t with these….) but they hold up just fine in the washer machine.

The Reef Diaper eliminates the hassle of washing your filter socks and gives you a perfectly clean element every time. The filter element is easy to replace and it only takes a few seconds. I created the Reef Diaper because I hated washing filter socks. If you ever get tired of washing your filter socks I think you will be happy with the Reef Diaper.

When are you going to sell a 7 inch size
If the 4" sock is successful we will likely create a 7" version. This will take quite a bit of time because it will require new tooling . For a short term solution we might create an adapter for our 4” filters. It obviously wouldn't provide the capacity of the 7", but it would provide an option for systems with lighter bio loads. Let me know if you have any other questions.
