Is my filter sock preventing my tank from cycling properly? When I put it in it was white, now it’s brown. How often should I clean it?

It is not preventing your tank from cycling, generally clean every 3 days depending how fast it gets dirty. The stuff it catches just sits there and rots, it's continues to put nutrients into the water until you clean it.

It's a mechanical filter, it's won't effect your cycle.

Replace it right before it starts to over flow.
