I'm thinking of adding filter socks to my system but not only when doing a water change to help catch particulates. What are some pros and cons of each

I keep mesh and felt as I find them both useful. The felt will remove much smaller particles and clog faster. It also takes a machine washing to get them clean. The mesh are great for bigger particles and can be rinsed back to usefulness in a sink. If I'm going to be gone for a week, or if I'm going to do something that will put larger particles in the water, I run the mesh. Normally I run the felt.

I do the same and put the filter socks in before a water change and leave my socks in until they clog. I make my felt sock for .25 each and toss them.
