Filter socks or filter cups

I personally prefer the cups as i have a life and don’t wish to spend it cleaning socks or wasting a small load in the washer nor would I want it in my clothes . Theirs a company that keeps advertising on here called reef diapers which I believe are disposable socks but I haven’t looked into it yet or to figure out how cost effective and efficient they are .

I use one of each. My sock stays clean over a week since I started using PNS probio. Before that maybe 3 days and black with gunk now over a week and still white. The bacteria breaks down the organic waste before it turns to gunk and ends up in the sock.

The Reef Diaper uses a light weight disposable filter element and the flange assembly is reused. They are very simple to change and you get a perfectly clean filter every time. You can purchase the filter elements in bulk for a buck a piece. Follow the link below for more info. Let me know if you have any questions.

what option did you end up going with? i just got my WaterBox Frag 145.5 up and dont want to change socks every 4 days! these 7" filters are huge

gotcha, I didnt see any 7" diapers and wasnt sure how i felt about the adapter and its ability to filter correctly but thats a message for them specifically im going to send! Thank You.

All my thoughts (not only in reefing) start with "what produces the least amount of waste ... especially plastic waste". Which means that I use filter socks whenever I have to filter something out. Just rinse them or throw them in the washer (like some people do) and they are good to go again. But most of the time I do not use any mechanical filtration at all and just clean the sump when necessary with a water change that I have to do from time to time anyway. The rest of the detritus get's eaten by the coral, fuge life or gets collected in the skimmer cup. When I don't use a mechanical filter I have cups (with custom spacers I designed and printed) in the holder. But it's mainly to quiet down the overflow. Other than than I do not see huge advantages of cups over socks. Cups need floss to be added which will create more waste. Sorry to bring up the waste-topic but I don't understand why reefing is such a wasteful hobby and seemingly nobody gives a flying fudge about that topic.
