The dang filter socks clog real quick.. Who users what and why? Looking for a better solution..

Personally I don't use any filter socks. I do use 2 bags of chemi pure elite and bio pellets in my sump/fuge. 2 maxi jets 1200 in first and final compartments in fuge to keep water moving and detritus suspended. a reef octopus skimmer rated 200 gal for my 90 gal system.

I do not use any filter medium in any of my reef tanks, socks, bags, sponges, foams or fiber. Never seen a need for it.

I have 2 socks 1 for each input from the tank. The final stage of my water passes thru a sponge. I agree that the socks really clog quickly. They then are just a trap for nitrates. Further they really are tough to clean. I am going to try without them based on what I am reading here.

When I'm doing a water change and stirring up the detritus, I'll stick some filter floss between the baffles in my sump and leave it there overnight. Other than that, I don't use anything.

I also do not use socks or sponges. As mentioned, I just clean the detritus out of your sump when doing maintenance.
