I was wondering, who uses filter socks? I would like to know what size that you use in terms of pores (microns) and which one you feel is small enough to filter out and how often do you change the sock. I use a 4"x13"x200 micron sock and I change it out every other day

I use 2 4"x15" 200micron (mesh) socks, one of each drain, and change them out every couple days. Reason I only use the 200 micron socks, or really any socks at all, is because I got some messy eaters (and they're getting big) with just a few softies. I just wanted something to catch the little bits of food they leave behind and the crap their stir up. I've noticed though that once I started dosing vinegar, the main thing that clogs up the socks is the bacteria - the socks look almost empty til you take em out and there's a slimey coat covering them that's almost completely transparent, having only a slight brownish tint to it.

I use 3 of 4x8 1/2" 200 micron for 2 drains from ebay, I ve been using filter sock's for years, but lately I loved what I found. I change every 4-5 days, hand wash from a garden hose then sun dry, and they r way cheaper than any thing else..
Lmk if anything else u need to know...

I actually use 3 X 32" 100 micron socks at a time on my 650g sps/lps system; 4 if you count the one I use on the skimmer return to cut down on the microbubbles. The only issue is having to change and clean them every other day.

I use 200 micron felt socks on my nano because I hate cleaning the sump (I can't siphon it and the whole stand has to be moved to get it out) and tons of detritus still gets past the mesh ones. I change them twice a week and clean them in regular ol' bleach after rinsing them and I get about 8-12 months out of a sock with 5 of them in rotation.

Consider investing in one of these :)

Helps clean out the detritus from the sump, works like a charm!

Yeah I've got a shop vac and am a pro with it (I did construction when I was younger and when I was 14 and 15 before I could do much I was johnny on the spot with cleanup), but when you live in an apartment with brand new carpet under your tank, a tiny 10g sump, and have a stand that is jam packed to the brim since it is so small it just doesn't work very well. Much easier to just throw a sock on there and call it a day :-)

Haha I know the feeling! Now my tank is in the basement, so I can make a bigger mess :)

Just about every time I do a water change I'm guaranteed to make a huge spill.
