So any of you who read my previous post know I have fineley ground up GFO dust I need to remove. I have never used filter socks before. What micron sock should I get for removing this dust and what micron sock should I get for every day use?

Where do most people buy their filter socks? Thank you!

Last time I bought some I just went to amazon and picked a set of 8 200 micron felt socks. I like 200 micron as it seem to filter well but not clog too fast like 100 micron has for me. Just have to pick what opening size and length of sock match your sump setup.

I got two for 10 on eBay and it's gross how fast they got dirty! They were stitched and not crimped so I imagine they are BRS. I feel like I've learned over the past year that BRS is usually trustworthy to have the best products. Also the eshopps ones have a seam in the middle that isn't stitched that I heard could come undone.

Now how often do you guys clean or change yours and what is the best way to clean them? I just put mine in the washing machine with no soap. I heard you can put bleach in is this safe? I was also thinking of either power washing or dishwasher top rack with no soap.

Do not use soap. A small amount of bleach is all you need. Let them air dry before use.
Just plain bleach, no scented stuff.

I have 50 or so socks from BRS that I change out every other day.

I just bought some biotek 100 micron mesh socks. For the most part, I've found most of the mesh socks pretty low quality...these however give me some hope. I can't stand the felt type as cleaning them really sucks. Nothing easier than a quick rinse in the kitchen sink then back in the tank.

I don't mind cleaning felt socks. I toss them in a 5g bucket with a bit of bleach when dirty. About once every two weeks I dump the pail in the washer. Come back couple hours later and take them back to storage. I really only takes me about 5 minutes every two weeks to clean them.

I put them in the wash with no soap and they came out great! Made sure to turn them inside out of course

has anybody ever used the Vertex 300um Nylon Filter 1836 – 7″ Filter Sock? i was on their site and i am thinking about purchasing some from them....any thoughts?

thanx bud....they are cheaper in price too....ill try them both out and do a personal comparison....it'll give me something to blog about

I get mine from Amazon, and I use the 100 micron felt socks. I change them out every 3-4 days. I turn them inside out, throw them in my washer with a little bleach, then air dry. Works well for me. I use 4 socks a week, but I have 12 on hand so they get a good rotation and just in case I forget to wash them. A friend of mine actually makes her own, and it is way cheaper then buying pre-fab ones.

I have been making my own. I bought a square yard of felt from joanns for $7 and made 27 socks. They are probably around 150 microns +/-
