Hi!
So, compared to most here, I am relatively a new reefer. ( 2 years in)
My first tank was a 30 gallon tank from Innovative Marine, and it ran filter baskets in the back that I could layer up with different filter options. Carbon, sponges etc.
My new tank, now a 40 gal from Innovative Marine, came with filter "socks"?
I am not sure about this....
Does it filter the junk out the same way?
Ammonia, sulfites...
sounds too easy.

Filter socks are mainly for mechanical filtration. You can add media bags to them for chemical or biological, but I think it's more common to use media reactors for those types of things. What were you running before?

Filter socks catch all the free floating junk, detritus, food, etc. Change them out every few days. Bulk Reef Supply just did a great video comparing how often you should change them out. I like to use the Micron material socks because they are easy to clean. I change them every 2 or 3 days and they just wash out in the sink.

I will attach a photo of my old set up when I get home!

filter socks basically remove suspended particle, uneaten food and fish poop keep the water looking crystal clear.

BRS just recently put up a video about filter socks that has some good info as well. (second link is an older video about basic info.

was actually on the couch. but no not yet lol. the burn pattern still sits, giving my Wife the upper hand in all situations LOL.
A new square could be put in you if it matches the carpet. I'vs seen it done before and if it's done properly, then you can not tell that a square section was replaced. :)

Lol...
The wife always has the upper hand... or at the least, make her feel like she does. :D

So these are the filter baskets I was using. In my original tank. So they are levels of different sponges to remove ammonias and nitrates – a carbon sponge… The green sponge on the table is my extras normally that would go on the very top of the stack.
I apologize for not remembering the brand of "sponges" used or exactly what they remove. I just keep buying with similar sponges as I need to replace them.
Compared to a simple "sock" in my new aquarium – it just looks too easy now. I am wondering if I am still getting the best filtration I can.

it depends on how you want to run your tank.
on my biocube i removed all of that and only run a small bad of carbon.
my larger tank (both old and new setting up) run filter socks with just a bag of carbon thrown into the sump. I change my socks out every 3-4 days
there's nothing wrong with using the materials you have shown in the picture, i just like the simplicity of swapping out the carbon and filter sock. quick and easy maintenance.

I did the same went from sponges in my 100 ltr too 350 ltr with sump and 1 sock .. but so long as you have a good oversized skimmer in there you will be good ..

Sweet! The sock definitely seems like the easiest way to go.
So because it is a Fusion 40, I'm assuming the "sump" is the section in the back? I can just fill the carbon bag right into that?

yup.
just put an amount that's right for your amount of water volume.
are you running a protein skimmer?
