Filter Socks

What length filter socks should I use on a 40 gallon breeder sump?
I have the 4'' holes to hold them, just not sure about how long they should be.

Personal preference really. I've always gone with the longer socks due to clogging; however, looking back, short socks would have pushed me to change them more often . I don't run filter socks anymore though.

i run them and change as needed. they work well and i run the length to the bottom of the sump which is 16".

my question: whenever i change them i get microbubbles until they clog a bit and slo down the flow i guess? typical?
