How do you guys wash dirty filter socks....

I turn mine inside out and rinse them really well then I put them in the washer with a low residue soap. I let them air dry. How do you guys do it?

Turn inside out and rinse off under the faucet. Then to a bucket with a splash of bleach. Next day I take it out, rinse it off under the faucet again and then hang to dry.

Turn inside out or not, then throw them in the trash!

Rinse with water hose, turn inside out and when I accumulate 25 or so wash them in the washer with about 3/4 cup of bleach, extra rinse and air dry for a few days.

Lots of threads regarding the pitfalls of filter socks, start reading!

I dont. Got rid of them and replaced them with cups and filter floss

Best method is to wash them with 2cups of BLEACH ONLY in your washing machine using the hottest water setting.

NEVER USE LAUNDRY DETERGENT. those chemicals are hard to get out on the fabric bc detergent companies are always adding complex chemicals to avoid staining, reduce fading, strengthen fabric fiber, soften the feel of the clothes. All WICKED chemicals that bonds to microfibers in the material and for sure wicked to your tank

No need to turn them inside out.

Air dry them fir 24hrs and any bleach residue will air evaporate to nothingness....ok to put back into service

After about 30 washes you'll start to get holes in them the size of your pinky.....prob bc yhe bleach weakens the material. That's when you throw away and rebuy

I change mine every couple days and store the old ones in a bucket. When I've cycled through the 50 or so I have I throw them all in the washing machine with vinegar or bleach with an extra rinse. I run the machine empty before and after washing my socks just out of paranoia about picking up detergent or leaving something nasty behind.

Any concerns with detergent residue being left on the socks and causing harm to corals?

A few months ago, I had a few corals suddenly start dying in a very healthy mature tank. ICP results didn’t reveal anything out of the ordinary. For some reason, the only thing I can think of is the socks since I had recently washed them...

I’ve been sock-less since and I miss how clear of particulates my water used to be. Definitely looks much nicer with socks.

2 cups? I've been doing 2 cap fulls, 2 cups seems like a lot.

Reasoning for this? Seems like a waste of money. $5.99 min per sock or $0.99 for a gallon of bleach.

I've bought them from an industrial supplier (usually you have to but 100) for pretty cheap or ebay. I think the most I've paid was $3.99 from a place called clear choice aquatics. ebay is hit or miss, you can get some $.99 cent one's from china that are pretty much single use or you can get some good ones. luck of the draw.

Edit: Just realized this is an old thread, not sure how I ended up here :-)
