1) Any tips on cleaning them? What’s easiest?

2) possible to run a good system without them? Or should I still use them as added redundancy either way?

I am setting up a 55g sump for a 106g display, so I figured I can make any changes now.

I havent tried it out yet but I have a media cup that goes in place of a sock. Going to use filter floss and just change it out as needed. This one if i want to run carbon or other media i have a spot with flow

I run a cup with floss now,
but when i used to run socks, i would turn them inside out, put any interesting critters back in the display, and rinse them off in the sink. then into a bleach bucket. once the bucket was full of socks, into the washing machine they went. Hang up to air dry.

--edit---
no soap in the washing machine......

So, theoretically if I just put my skimmer in a section AFTER the filter-floss, I could make a section where the overflow feeds that has egg-crate to separate from the next section (for skimmer) then next section is fuge etc.

So Overflow would feed a 16” wide or so section full of filter-floss, then, to skimmer section and so-on

Due to space constraints, I was only able to set up a 10gal tank for my sump for my 55gal main tank. I tried to use a filter sock on the drain pipe from my overflox box but the limited space in the 10gal tank made it a challenge and due to the length of the sock, most rested on the bottom. Can I still have a successful reef tank without a filter sock?

I used to just throw them in the washer, 20 at a time with just bleach and a double rinse cycle. Would rinse again after that then dry. And a final rinse in RO water befor putting on my tank.

Then I cut the bottom off of one sock and have left it like that for the past 4 months. The growth that occurred after this was like nothing I’ve ever experience before.

Here is a thread on the same subject from a while back. Perhaps this can help too: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/filter-sock.392489/
Personally? I turn them inside out, toss them in the washer in hot water (no soap) with a bit of bleach. I then rewash (still no soap) and let air dry.
