Been Googling without finding a answer so here goes...... How long does the average filter sock lasts meaning I have to buy a new one and trash the old one

I've had the same 7 felt socks for at least 5 years. Soaked in bleach and washed in machine. They pill up but work great still. They did not have plastic rims. Just draw strings.

However I just threw them away because washing is a pain IMO. I now use mesh and rinse with a hose. No idea how long they will last.

Thank you very much

Funny just watched a BRS video on this, they say around 7 washes as the material starts to stretch so they become less effective, have to say that does seem a little over cautious.

I have Six of them that I use (the 200 micron) But I only use ONE on my sump...I use a combination of Filter Cups and Socks. They can last a while if they are cleaned routinely and also the quality of socks (In my opinion)... I still have ALL my six from over a year ago and they capture LOTS of aquarium crud...I rotate ONE every week. Wash in the laundry with some bleach, and air dry...Good as new. So it depends on how often you rotate them as well as clean them. Different users will have different experience with them and also the quality of socks.

Yeah that's what got me thinking like you would hope socks last at least a year

My felt got more effective over time, if anything. Definitely not less. I'm sure they would have lasted another 5 years easy.

The mesh I could see "stretching out" and not lasting as long.

They’ll last well over a year. I ended up switching to all mesh socks because I was tired of washing 100+ socks every week for my aquarium maintenance clients.

I have been using mine (felt) for a year now, wash in WM with a little bleach. I am thinking they will work for the next 5 years at least.

I have some felt 4 years but switched to mesh which may be indefinite

I wash and rewash for years already. They are perfectly fine.

Wash with bleach and set machine for extra rinse. Air dry outside. Never a problem. I have probably over 20-30 in rotation - some for over 6 years.
