Filter socks

Well, use simple test.....

Take dirty clogged sock, soak it in bleach.... Rinse with water.

Is it still clogged? If yes, then all stuf that causes clogging is still in fibers, just we cant see them.

If not...well, then its clean, right?

As far as i know, chlorine bleach disinfect, kills pretty much everyrhing, and dissolve any dirt, stains, etc.....

If it don't dissolve (clean) anything, why we use bleach for cleaning old dry rock? To clean them from organics, or just to make them shiny white? ;)
Bleach disinfects but it's not a detergent that removes/dissolves dirt. It only bleaches it, so you might think the stain is gone.
The removing of dirt is just because you're rinsing with water, the bleach doesn't do anything in this aspect.

So.... Water actualy clean sock, bleach just make them look clean?

So, then, we can skip bleach totaly....

I agree 100%! I kind of proved this to myself I bleached a bunch of socks in a 5 gal bucket once until sparkling white and continued to fill bucket with rinse with fresh water and stir up and dumping several times the water continued to produce white cloudy particulate water after 5 or 6 rinses. it was just way too much time to get the water clear. Basically the dirt turned white. so now in winter I run through washing machine with double rinse and in summer I hose blast first.

Most important step! lol somehow when my wife comes home she always knows I did it! there is always something out of place she notices! lol
I always end up splashing bleach on a towel or something else in the laundry room and it gets white spots

i use felt. i have about 4 pairs that i cycle through. once dirty i put in a bucket of bleach, then wash at a nearby laundromat once they’re all dirty

Then they go in my washer with bleach or vinegar (whichever I have near by) and then rinse for like 6 cycles, then hang to dry for minimum of 24hrs, usually closer to 48-72.

I then run a clean cycle on washer as needed. Usually, I will run the dog towels (aquarium towels) first, then run a clean cycle.
That seems a lot of wasted water and electricity. I've never don't more than 1 rinse cycle and no wash cycle afterwards and no one in the house has complained about clothes smelling or not being clean. I usually wash somewhere between 12 and 20 socks at a time that are dirty to the point of overflowing. When they overflow thats my indicator they need changed lol. Sump is in the basement so I can tell by the sound of the overflows it time to change socks :face-with-hand-over-mouth:

There are several factors that determine how long it takes for a filter sock to clog. Some of the obvious ones are bio-load, micron rating and filter area. One factor that I think is often overlooked is carbon dosing. The bacteria colonies that feed on the carbon can clog filter socks very quickly. Overdosing can add to the problem. I have experienced this with Reef Diapers and felt socks. Mesh socks might clog even quicker due to the reduced filtering area. I use NOPOX and my dosing pump stopped working recently. One of the first things I noticed was that the Reef Diaper wasn't clogging as quickly.

Another contributing factor is the elevation of the sock above the waterline. Raising the sock will create a higher pressure differential across the sock as it becomes dirty. This can extend the time it takes for the sock to clog. One potential downside is increased noise from the water falling from a greater height.

Im a felt guy. Used both just seems clearer with these. I know they catch lots of garbage and need to be changed at 3 days.
