Yes and no.

Yes in the sense that skimmer (( for example )), a skimmer can be oversized for a certain sized tank and not perform efficiently. In addition, the water can be "too clean" for certain soft corals and/or macro algae.

However, those are extreme examples, and in most cases the answer would be no.

Example, a skimmer with a 10' body would be too big for a 55 gallon tank, but the odds of that happening are slim to none.
