I'm running a canister filter on my 55 and I'm wanting to add a algae scrubber is it possible to put it inline on the canister and and run it all thru it or do I need to buy a pump and set one up that way

I am not familiar with the algae scrubber you describe.#REEFSQUAD Attaching it inline may encourage some algae growth/death in the canister.

I think it would depend on your design. Before the canister will be issues because of loose debris and any life that may become trapped within the canister. After the canister would be fine I think but you have the water run off that needs to be pumped back to the dt. If you were to add a pump after the scrubber, you might be ok. I'm sure someone might have attempted this already so they might chime in as well.

Like saltgator said, with a DIY mindset, you could come up with something. The thing that I would have trouble with is how to get the light to the media to grow the algae? The body and connections is a good idea for a place to start. You have an isolated reactor that is dark inside... hmmmm
