Hi all I'm new on here. I'm about to start with a marine tank. I am using a juwel Rio 240 which I have been using as a cichlid tank. Am I able to use the external filter I had before,I have been told I can just put live rock in the filter and this will be fine is this the case.Iwill be putting live rock in the tank aswell.

The rock you have in the display tank will be your primary biological filter. That external filter you have can be used to run carbon or GFO if need be. You can also run some sort of mechanical filtration such as a sponge or some floss to polish your water of particulate matter every so often as well.

Does that mean in each compartment of my external I put something different in. Sorry totally new to this. My external has 3 different layers.

When you say external filter do you mean a canister filter? If so I wouldn't bother...as the maintenance is very taxing. Like cloak said, your live rock is your main filtration system, that along with a good protein skimmer is sufficient unless you decide to go with a sump. (I would recommend the sump IMO)

The canister tends to be a factory for nitrates, so you may want to forgo that filter....
