Anyone can do this, but thought I would throw this out there while I was thinking of it.

Maxijet 1200 I use to mix the salt, then pump it over to a clean holding tank (Brute Bin), passing the water through an old BRS (Bulk Reef Supply) Carbon/GFO reactor. In my case I have two canisters only one I use. I use a sediment filter 1 Micron, which is what I had available, might use a 5 Micron instead. ID (Inside Diameter) of pipe connected to Maxijet is 1/2", which is connected to a section of OD 1/2" that fits into the canister. I used a Reducing Splicer with barbed ends, 1/2 x 3/8 to connect the two pipes.

Don't you use RO/DI water when you mix your salt? It's already filtered..?

Not really needed but It cannot hurt. Only thing is that I would not use those metal barbs.

Just started doing this myself after watching the BRS video. You would be surprised what the filter catches. I have my plumbed in after my mixing barrel but before the hose to the tank. I don't filter the water while mixing or sitting, I filter it just before I send it to the tank.

Yes I use IO, and my 1micron sediment filter is rather brown. Think it was around 20$ for the spare canistar, and 1 micron sediment filter.

Give the man a break he was the cleanest purest water to go into the tank. I would too depending on my source... I mean have you seen what's in your reservoirs lately. ;Yuck;Wacky:eek:. I'd be doing extra filtering too :)

Grab water at high tide and dhould be pure. Filtering should work also

Throw some diatom powder in that filter it will rip any microscopic bacteria down to 1 micron

I'm looking into doing something similar (in-sump to polish water).

Using diatom powder - you would need to run the filter in a closed loop to "prime" the filter first no?

I have my mixing station set up with a NuClear filter on the output line.
This is the last step before the mixed saltwater goes into my tank.

Though I have never had a problem with the Tropic Marin Pro salt mix leaving a precipitate, residue or gunk.
I have never had to clean my containers since I put them in service over a year and a half ago.

Yea you can call it overkill and all but its my way and it works.

I have an old eheim caniister filter hooked up to my mixing barrel for the same reason. It's stuffed with filter floss. Does a fine job IMO.

I like this idea, but I already run 3 micron filter socks in my tank, so for me anything in new water would be filtered out within an hour or so anyways. There does often seem to be some undissolved stuff in mixing barrels. Is it harmful? doesn't seem to be, but doubt it's any good either.

Not when using a brass adopter in the hoses. That is probably worse for the tank then what ever he is filtering out!

Remove be the brass fitting. If is worse for your system than everything your filtering out. You can find plastic fittings if you really feel you need to keep filtering your salt water.

Yes. Or you could not run the return pump but run the polishing filter until the chamber is clear in the sump then restart the return pump. I run a five stage sun sun with polyester filter media from course to fine inside my overflow/skim box. I shut off return pump to stop flow temporarily and mix the diatom powder with tank water pour into over flow box run the sun sun and wait and hour or until the powder mixture has cleared up again my suction and return from sun sun filter are in the overflow box approximately 5 gallon holding at all times I usually mix 2-3 cups of diatom powder and let run clear then restart return pump to the system. Why run it clear before you restart is to keep the diatom mix from dusting out you DT and sump This is the way I have been polishing water since my vortex diatom filter burnt out a long time ago. Any water mixed or rodi goes through here water changes top off But I do not do water changes maybe 50% a year on my 120 gallon. This works for me good luck.
