I have about 4 months experience with a sump and already have grown to hate filter socks and cleaning them. I have purchased a filter bucket/cup and have been using 2 types of media for filtration and wanted to get your opinion.

First I was using filter floss this seems the easiest. Seems to work good the only con I have really is you have to keep buying it and you keep throwing it away.

Second, I used foam. I cut 3 foam pads to fit perfectly in my filter bucket/cup. I also used 3 different types. top was 20ppi then 30 ppi and last layer is 50 ppi. This seems to do a good job also. Con here you have to squeeze them out for about 3 minutes to get them clean. There is a lot of stuff left in the button of my wash bucket so I know it is doing a good job. I have been using RODI water for the rinse.

I just wanted to get everyone's opinion on of the 2 options above which do think give the best filtration?

filter socks are so much easier, buy 4 of them and change them 1 time a week after a month throw them in a bucket with a drop of bleach and let them soak 24 hours, then let them completely dry out and their good

I hate cleaning filter socks too. That's why I created the Reef Diaper. The light weight filter element is disposable and the top flange is reused. They are simple to change and provide a perfectly clean filter without the hassle of washing. You can follow the link below for more info. Let me know if you have any questions.
