filtration for 60 gallon tank

i dont want a sump pump or refugium. can i use just a protein skimmer or a hang on filter for reefs? thanks

eventually i will get a refugium but for the foreseeable future

I ran a 60g cube for 22 years using a canister filter (mainly for carbon and additional LR rubble), a dual biowheel HOB and a TLF 150 HOB for occasional GFO. Worked just fine although the canister became a PIA to clean after the first 10 years or so!
